Is Unassisted Childbirth Safe?
by Laura Shanley

One of the greatest myths perpetuated by the medical system is that hospitals are the safest place to give birth. Stories abound of women dying in childbirth before the advent of modern hospitals. And yet, few people realize that women were not dying due to the fact that childbirth is inherently dangerous, but rather because of the living conditions at that time. Poor women were generally underfed and overworked during pregnancy, while wealthy women were often deprived of fresh air and sunshine because brown skin was considered socially unacceptable. Wealthy girls were corsetted from the age of eleven, so that by the time they turned fourteen, their pelvises were literally deformed. These physical factors, combined with various psychological ones (fear, shame, and guilt) led to the problems that some women encountered.

Giving birth is ecstasy..our birth-right and our body's intent. Mother nature, in her wisdom, prescribes brithing hormones that take us outside our usual state, so that we can be transformed on every level as we enter motherhood.

I had a natural, home birth ......no painkillers.... no assistance!! My mid wife (for emergency) and emotional support and my husband......

There is an exquistite hormonal orchestra that unfolds optimally when birth is undisturbed, enhancing saftey for both mother and baby.

Our way of birth affects us life-long, both mother and baby, and that an ecstatic birth, a birth that takes us beyond our self, is the gift of a liftetime!

4 major hormonal systems are active during labour and birth.

Oxytocin - the hormone of love
Endorphins - hormones of pleasure and transcendence
Epinephrine and Norepinphrine - hormones of excitment
Prolactin - the mothering hormone.

The birth proceeds when the middle brain takes over the neocortex or rational brain....

This is a CONSCIOUSNESS SHIFT!

All current systems are set up to disrupt this SHIFT..... there is no quiet atmosphere, no privacy....it is further disturbed by induction, pain killers, epidurals, caesarean surgery, and seperation of mother and baby after birth.

Thanks for that positive post.

I posted this at Letsroll forums and I got a bit of ridicule really, which was probably expected. It's surprising to think that women are conditioned to see birth as a 'burden'. Yes, I suppose it may be burdensome in terms of weight gain as well as disrupting everyday activities but in terms of a creative act - I hardly call it a burden!

I also feel that there are energies in womens bodies that are far more powerful than any chemical can induce.

I had one of my kids at home with a midwife, no medication, but I labored in water (it was very helpful). I'd call it the most wonderful experience of my life. Very empowering and beautiful. But I wouldn't call it orgasmic!

I have a prenatal client at the moment so this information I can use since I always advocate natural birth with a midwife or doula if you can afford it.

The website http://www.orgasmicbirth.com seems to have disappeared. Does anyone know what happened to it?

Another good source for this concept is

http://www.birthasweknowit.com/trailer.html There are two short videos there.

I haven't seen the whole video but it fascinates me how the female body is built and how the instincts kick in during the birth process, both conscious and unconscious.

I don't want to have a child, but in my research into why people are so messed up these days, I've come to the conclusion that conception, pregnancy and birth is no longer a spiritual, consciously intending event. Combine that with the rampant amount of unnecessary cesarean sections today.

There's a HUGE different between a medically unassisted birth versus a cold, sterile environment of the hospital or operating room.

I feel cesarean surgeries are nothing more than ripping the baby from it's womb and preventing both mother and child to go through the process that nature designed, chemically (hormone) and physically. No wonder so many mothers now have post-partum depression.

In a calm, quiet home birth setting, the baby is placed skin-on-skin with mom and dad and the bonding process begins, and normally they do not cut the cord until it stops pulsing, unlike in a hospital where the cord is cut right away. Also in hospitals, the heels are lanced for a blood test, silver nitrate is poured into the eyes (that causes a lot of eye problems for babies), and doctors treat babies as if they'll never remember the event because their brains aren't developed enough. Babies are placed in rough cloth and bound tight, and their little bodies are not allowed to shake, which is a natural function to release trauma.

I'm a firm believer that the majority of women can give birth at home and not subject their child to any additional trauma like they would in a hospital.

Like a line in that video states, just imagine a generation from now, if more mothers and fathers would adopt these philosophies.

YouTube also has a few graphic videos of natural birth process, some unassisted. The couples in these videos seem calm, relaxed and happy.

Wow you know a lot about this Ceara.. great information! I do happen to be related to a couple people who were/ are wheelchair ridden / mentally handicapped for life because of no medical help available. Babies sometimes come out with cord wrapped around their neck or other complications. It's too bad there often isn't a good compromise between the two.

It's because I stayed a night at the Holiday Inn Express. lol just kidding

Well, I'm not an "expert" but have been doing lots of reading on it in an attempt to understand people's mental states. I can't explain it away, but after really really wondering about it I had a dream that basically encouraged me to study the different methods of birth. Plus I've had the pleasure of seeing two nephews grow up and my niece, who's now in 5th grade. (All three were born via cesarean.) I've watched cesarean surgeries on TV (The Learning Channel) and have seen two babies born in person which is weird. I kept cringing the whole time. lol I had a former friend back in the states that "let me in"on the action, and I was appalled at the entire process to be honest.

First she had an epidural and slept throughout her total labor, then they woke her up from her nap and told her it was time to push. Then they literally sliced her perineum (looked more like hacking) and the head came out. The cord was wrapped around the neck and they tied and cut it before allowing the rest of the baby to come out. There was blood everywhere.

The showed the baby to mom and dad, everyone wept. Baby was screaming and they quickly whisked it away to do the Apgar test.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apgar_score

After that, they clean up baby and do the nose/mouth suction and proceed to wrap it up tight in a pretty rough cloth (or so I thought) and slapped on a cap and handed it back to mom and dad, all the while massaging mom's tummy to encourage the placenta to emerge. I found out the next day they lanced the heel for a blood test. I've seen this on TV before and the baby just screams during the whole thing. They claim the silver nitrate is an antibiotic for the eyes to help prevent blindness at birth. But I imagine that stings like hell. No wonder babies have a hard time seeing at first and squint a lot. Babies on that "Birth as We Know It" video trailer seem to have much brighter, clearer eyes.

I have watched other births on TV/internet where the cord was wrapped around the neck and they would just wiggle it around the head and birth would proceed as normal and didn't cut it as in the case of my friend.

For the shaking to release trauma, I learned about that from a Conscious Media Network video, interviewing David Berceli, and his views on physical trauma release. There's an example video that goes with it, showing how an adult can create this process intentionally to help relieve Traumatic Stress Disorder. I imaging it can have lots of other benefits. Not to get too graphic.....lol... I'm blushing... but I've researched whole body orgasms in women and they tremble uncontrollably and end up feeling good afterward. I can't help but wonder if the shaking thing is all connected to traumatic birthing processes and other trauma throughout life that many people just sweep under the proverbial rug and try to forget.

I used to have a PDF showing the exercises but can't find it. I remember one of them was the "sit on the wall" type for a few minutes.
