So I turn on my PC yesterday, it's working fine and then blue screen. Turn it off, turn it back on, now it doesn't read the hard drive. It can't find it, says it's not installed. Primary Drive 0 not found. Tried checking all the connections, they're all good. Plugged in in as slave on the CD drive, it still can't be found. I' assuming it's dead. Or at least the part that makes the connection is dead. Does anyone know any hard drive recovery services that don't cost $300? Or any way to retrieve data? It's not super important stuff, but lots of music, family and vacation photos and documents.

If you didn't hear unusual noises from it, it may be the card under it. If you have two of the same hard drive, you could try temporarily swapping the card.

The forum at http://arstechnica.com/ would probably be more helpful on this topic.

If you don't hear any noise coming from your hard drive. Then try to change the IDE or SATA cable. Then reboot your computer again and check it.
