It's hard to know for sure, since I don't have a super telescope. Which brings the question... there have to be some major geeks out there with some awesome home telescopes. Has anyone else actually been able to see these areas on the moon, if they exist at all?

I think they're stretch-marks. Seriously. Check out Google Earth or any planet that is mapped 3-D. They have to stretch parts of the images to them wrap onto a sphere nicely -at least that's my guess.
